They are now busy designing solar powered notebooks that will rely only on the sun for getting power and not on non-renewable energy sources. Different tech companies are also spending money on designing brilliant solar powered notebook concepts. In the following, we list unique and promising solar powered notebook concepts.

Solar Powered Apple MacBook

Cupertino based world-renowned tech giant Apple is doing some serious research regarding the best solar powered laptop. They recently got the patent for an electronic device display module. It is a two sided display screen with embedded photovoltaic units. There is a chance that the MacBook will soon see a solar powered variant based on this patent.

It is also speculated that the design of this unique notebook will use touch input system on the exterior shell. The top of the notebook, or the optional second screen, can turn opaque or transform into solid cover as per the wish of the users.

This brilliant solar powered notebook design that is not dependent on the non-renewable energy sources. It has sturdy and powerful batteries charged by a wide solar panel. Users can work on the notebook while it gets charged and they can also remove the solar panel and place it under the sun for charging. You can work on the notebook even when the solar panel is not attached, relying on a battery that will store charge gathered by the solar panels. This device will help you work under the sun and in unconventional places without any electric outlet.

Most laptop designers are focusing on increasing the battery life so that we can work for longer periods without having to charge. The designers of the Luce Solar Powered Laptop are doing something very different. They are trying to build a laptop that would not be dependent on any electric power sources or outlets, and be powered solely by solar energy. The 1.85 kg laptop is envisioned to have two different solar panels. One solar panel can be placed at the top of the laptop, and the other at its bottom for maximum exposure to the sun.

This is a concept laptop designed by a Canadian tech company. It is capable of generating power through a foldable solar panel. The laptop can work 8 to 10 hours on a full charge. The laptop is sturdy and has all the desired modern features like Dual Core Intel Atom D2500 processor and a 320 GB hard drive. It runs on Ubuntu and has a full HD display. The designers have not compromised with quality in their attempt to make this device independent. This concept laptop has been designed with the hope of solving the issue of unavailable power outlets in different working conditions.

Not just notebooks and laptops, but many other daily usable devices are being designed which operate with solar power. Carl Burdick and Laura Karnath have designed the Lifebook Leaf, is a notebook that uses solar energy. This device was initially designed for the “A life with Future” computing Competition, and grabbed many eyeballs.

The OLED touch screen of the laptop is foldable to make it look more like a notebook than a giant tab. The interior is made with rubber like material and the external shell is made of hardy polycarbonate. The water protection zip lock system makes it almost completely waterproof. The exterior of the laptop is actually a huge solar panel for generating power.

This laptop  is a part of the One Laptop Per Child project. It has been made to be cost effective so that kids can afford laptop within $100 and educate themselves. The XO 3.0 is basically a tablet style notebook and its soft top cover has solar panels embedded for charging. Being a part of the OLPC project, presence of solar panels also ensures that the laptop is useful for people who do not have continuous access to electricity.

Designers and technologists are working hard on making cost effective laptop devices that fit the smallest of budgets, and work using solar power. Some of them have great potential of being commercially produced.
